“I know Len, just call the ambulance.”
Chapter 18
Graham
Last night, ugh, last night is a giant drunken blur starting with the shots on the party bus and ending with the strangest dream that involved Lenny talking me off the ledge of calling this whole wedding off.
“You doing okay baby brother?” Will’s hand squeezes my shoulder as he hands me a tumbler with some amber liquid in it. My queasy stomach must come through loud and clear by my facial expressions because he continues, “Hair of the dog, just drink it.”
I tip it back and choke it down, “Gross, what the hell was that?”
He laughs, “Thirty-year-old Scotch, according to our old man it’s good luck on your wedding day. How are you feeling?”
“Man, I’m not sure whose brilliant idea it was to get plastered the night before your wedding, but it was a terrible mistake. All I want to do is crawl back into bed and wake back up when everything stops spinning. And to top it off, I had this crazy dream that I called Lenny and basically begged her to give me a reason to walk away.”
“Let me see your phone.”
Confused, I pull it out of my pocket and toss it over to him, “Why?”
He doesn’t answer right away, “That wasn’t a dream Graham.” Turning the phone so I can see the recent calls. “Looks like you two talked for over twenty minutes shortly after I dropped you off at home.”
Fuck. I was so convinced that it was just a dream I didn’t even bother looking at my recent calls.
A knock on the door disrupts my mental rewind of everything we said to each other.
“I’ll grab that. Pull your shit together, you look like you just saw a ghost.”
“Hey, Will.” The sweet voice of my soon-to-be wife should warm me but instead everything inside instantly feels cold. “I know it’s bad luck for the two of us to see each other before the wedding and all but do you think I could have a few minutes alone with him before we get started?”
“Ahh… yeah. Sure. I will just be down the hall checking on the kids to make sure they aren’t giving my mom too much grief.”
I stand up and turn to find the woman I thought completed me standing in the doorway of my old bedroom in a beautiful mermaid style gown. Emma isn’t overly curvey but you wouldn’t be able to tell by the way this dress fits her so perfectly.
“Hey you.” She smiles while closing the door to give us some privacy.
“You look beautiful Emma.” I reach out and pull her into my arms, lightly kissing the top of her head, avoiding any disruption to her perfect hair.
She pulls back, looking me in the eyes, her light blue orbs looking a little darker today.
“Is everything okay?”
“I actually came here to ask you that exact same thing.”
“Great minds think alike. Want to sit down?”
“No I better stand. I’m worried that once I sit down, I might not be able to stand back up.
